What is the “wind chill effect”?

wind chill effect

Ever noticed that even though the outside temperature is not very cold, the accompanying high winds can make people feel very cold? What is this phenomenon and how does it interact with the human body to make it feel cold? We use a term to express this phenomenon - the wind chill effect.

The wind chill effect is a phenomenon caused by wind that makes the body feel cooler than the actual temperature. The body surface temperature is higher than the outside air temperature causing the outside air to absorb heat from the body and the body's surface temperature to decrease.

Why is there a wind chill effect? Because the air has poor thermal conductivity and so an insulating layer can be formed around the skin, thus achieving a natural transition between the body and the cold air outside.

When there is no wind or the insulation is strong, this insulating layer of air is stable. When the wind is strong, the wind speed is high, or the insulation is inadequate, the body's insulation is blown away by the wind and as a result, the heat in the body is transferred back to the air around the skin, causing the surface temperature to drop and the body to feel cold. The higher the wind speed, the more heat the body loses and the colder the person feels.

Wind chill temperature is the unit that describes the wind chill factor, which is the perceived temperature of your skin. Experiments on wind and temperature sensation without any protective measures have shown that at above zero degrees Celsius, the sensation of human body temperature decreases by 3-5 degrees Celsius for every 2-step increase in wind, and at below zero degrees Celsius, the sensation of human body temperature decreases by 6-8 degrees Celsius for every 2-step increase in wind.

The following table shows the correspondence between wind chill and body surface temperature:

The wind chill effect affects our perception of cold, resulting in a marked difference between the thermometer reading and the body temperature.

So it is not unreasonable to say that fans are the standard for cooling in summer. On days when the temperature is high you can use fans to destroy the insulation around your skin, taking away the heat from your body and lowering your body temperature; or you can use them in combination with air conditioning, which lowers the surrounding temperature and creates a temperature difference between your body and the environment, while fans bring strong winds to lower your body temperature.
