Where is the best fan placement to make the room cooler?

best fan placement

Ever notice how the same fan is on in a room, but different orientations can produce different airflow differences?

In order to explain this curious phenomenon, Matthias completed a test which confirmed that the different orientations and distances at which fans are placed play an important role in the exchange of air in a room.

Here is a video of the test by blogger Matthias:

Matthias used a fan and an anemometer to find the most suitable position for blowing air in two rooms. A fan and an anemometer were placed by the windows of each room.

The experiment started with Matthias blowing the fan into the room and the anemometer in the other room showed no data, i.e. no air circulation factor was detected. When the fan was blown towards the outside, there was a change in the anemometer data and when the distance between the fan and the window was adjusted by moving again, the anemometer data rose and changed significantly and when a certain distance was reached the data started to show a downward trend.

Why does this phenomenon occur? It's actually using Bernoulli's law - in a stream or airflow, if the velocity is low, the pressure is high; if the velocity is high, the pressure is low. As there is a pressure difference, the air with high pressure around it will squeeze towards the air with low pressure, so when the fan is pulled away from the window at a certain distance, the air flow is high and the pressure is low, the heat in the room can be exchanged to the outside, making the whole room cooler very quickly.

If the fan is blowing towards the window it will be more efficient, so we move the fan in front of the window and blow it right in front of it?

Matthias experimented with fans placed at different distances from the window. The fans were too close to the window to effectively facilitate the exchange (diffusion) of air from different locations in the room and the ventilation was relatively inefficient. After a period of moving the positions around and analysing the data, he found that the fan placed at the furthest distance from the window was the most effective in terms of ventilation.

It can be seen that the amount of air flow in a room is not only related to the orientation of the fan, but also to the distance from the fan to the vent. So how far away from the window is the fan better?

According to the test results, placing the fan between 0.5-2.1 metres from the window, the room can achieve the best ventilation effect, so if you want to make the room faster ventilation and air exchange, it is best to use the fan, place the fan on the inner side of the room towards the window about 0.5-2.1 metres, while turning on the airflow to the maximum, you can obviously feel the flow of wind and air exchange at the open window.
