Why are ceiling fans jam?
Ceiling fans use bearings that rotate around a shaft and the efficiency of the bearings depends on the speed of rotation. In daily use the following conditions may cause the bearings to seize and thus affect the rotation speed of the ceiling fan if they occur.
1. The lubricating grease is dry and blocked.
Changes in temperature and humidity as well as overuse can dry out the luboil in the bearings. Even if it does not dry out the oil completely, the residual luboil will eventually degrade and lose most of its lubricating properties.
2. Dust invasion.
One of the biggest culprits of friction within the bearings is dust build-up. Poor sealing and irregular dust cleaning can cause dust to invade the bearings within the motor.
3. Wear of insulating paint or paper on the motor rotor.
The motor is exposed to moisture, overheating or prolonged immersion in water which affects the functioning of the insulating paint.
4. Bearing ball wear.
Frequent useleads to ball wear.
Why do I need to add oil?
Most ceiling fans require new luboil after a period of use. Changes in ambient temperature, and the constant use of the fan, will eventually cause the oil to degrade or disappear altogether. Properly added luboil can alleviate, or even resolve, stalling caused by dust and motor rotor insulation paint.
Which parts of a ceiling fan need to be lubricated?
The ceiling fan motor rotates the blades around a central shaft or rod fixed to the ceiling. Between the motor and the shaft, a set of bearings supports the motor and the fan blades rotating around the shaft. The cover of the bearings allows the balls to be seen, and adding oil to the balls ensures that the ceiling fan does not jam.
If your ceiling fan is making squeaking and rubbing noises, and you have ruled out other potential fault factors, then you may need to give it a fresh coat of luboil.
